Private Ernest Cochrane

 

Ernest Cochrane was born on 17 March 1900 at Dunseverick, Ballycastle, County Antrim, the first of six children of farmer John Cochrane and his wife Martha (née McKinney). Soon after, the family moved to Belfast. At the time of the 1911 Census, they were living at 13 Moscow Street, Shankill, John working as a shipyard labourer.

Cochrane enlisted in the North Irish Horse at Coleraine on 3 December 1917 (No.2751 – later Corps of Hussars No.72005). He was described as being 5' 9½" tall and gave his age as 18, his place of birth as Billy, County Antrim, and his occupation as a farm labourer.

Cochrane was reported to have deserted from the regiment's reserve base at Antrim on 12 September 1918. It is not known if he was subsequentially apprehended.
